Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Carpentry Apprentice for a big house builder called Barratt Redrow. Building new build houses. Apprenticeship consists of labouring, carpentry and odd jobs in compound.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
It’s was really hard to get into as it didn’t seem to be very well set up, support wise, in the beginning, but once you learnt how the ropes work and spent a bit of time there, you became more confident doing things on your own and could start to enjoy it a bit more.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
General know-how of carpentry jobs. Knowing how to fix things, improving problem solving skills, being independent and improving confidence through doing challenging tasks

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The college side of it is perfectly structured however the site side not so much. My first day on site, no carpenters knew that I was going to be there which made it seem like it was not well set up at all. It definitely felt like I was thrown in the deep end (which isn’t always a bad thing) but here I think it was done a little too poorly. And going onto now- I haven’t had a consistent mentor for more than a couple months if that, so that would definitely help with my progress if I could have someone more permanent.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I have lots of support from the office and from college but not as much on site, you either sink or swim at the end of the day, it’s more so down to you as an individual
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
10/10
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
By giving me a range of different jobs to do and pushing me out my comfort zone
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
No we don’t really have any of these
