Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
It was a one and a half day event, where the first day was spent attending talks by internal and external speakers. There was also a question and answer panel, with women in different roles within tax. We had the opportunity to ask as many questions as we wanted. We then got to take part in a case study about tax in break out rooms and feed back to the larger group. The half day event was a celebration afternoon, where we played a fun game and got to meet other people taking part in the programme.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was interesting to hear about the wide range of roles offered within tax alone! I didn't realise that there were so many niche and specialised roles.
It was also good to hear about the non-work related activities happening in EY. There is a large diversity and inclusion programme with many networks including religious networks, female networks and so on. It was also good to hear about the volunteering and charity work opportunities, that we could take part in.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
There was a talk done by an ex apprentice star in which I learnt about how to develop my own personal brand. This included steps on how to make a good first impression and strengthen communication skills.
As well as this, there was an in-depth insight into the tax industry where we learnt about different types of taxes, different roles within tax and a lot more. Overall I came away knowing a lot more than I did before the start of the day.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture and atmosphere was great. They made the day very engaging whilst and even though it took place online they were still able to get across their culture. There was a very strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, with all the different networks available on show.
Furthermore it was also good to hear about their future strategies in how they plan on increasing diversity, for example women partners and minorities in partnership roles.

It was a very enjoyable day, I enjoyed learning all about the company and the roles within the company. Furthermore I enjoyed learning about the tax industry and hearing from current women within the industry.
Overall the day was very engaging and the speakers did well to increase audience participation. I especially enjoyed when we were able to meet other participants on the programme. On the celebration afternoon, we took part in a game which was very fun and a nice way to round off the insight.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY
Make sure you complete your application carefully with all the correct details. Make sure you know the role you are applying to and that you will enjoy spending a day learning about it. For the interview process having an insight into the industry and company you are applying to will be beneficial to show off your enthusiasm. Furthermore there are some technical questions so make sure you have practiced for them, especially the maths assessment.
