Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a daily basis I am completing workpapers using Microsoft Excel, in the mornings we normally have a team debrief either virtually or in person. If I am working on new sections, the assistant manager always coaches me through what I am doing before beginning.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really do enjoy my programme, I like the way it is structured so we have time at BPP and then do our exams a few weeks later. It enables me to maintain my work life balance.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have been able to develop my communication skills and confidence, which has enabled me to speak to clients and ask for help when needed.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

There are some issues in terms of being informed of what we have to do with OTJ hours and how we note how many hours we are doing. Though with the actual education, we are informed in advance when we will be studying and our exam dates. Which is really helpful and if we need to move any exams due to certain circumstances, we have the opportunity to speak to someone senior to see how to go about it.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

In terms of my coaching, I am very supported and if I do need help I know who to reach out to. In terms of the apprenticeship and studying, it's very independent so when starting we had to go look for the information ourselves which can be a bit difficult when you are new. However with time, I have been able to understand what is expected of me and what needs to be completed.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I think support from the training provider is lacking in terms of they can fall really behind in scheduling progress review calls and informing us of things we need to complete.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The learning I am given is definitely helping me in my audit work, I am being able to use the theoretical skills I have learned and apply it to my practical work.

Why?

I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship so far, the people at KPMG have really helped me settle in and develop my knowledge. Every day I am learning something new.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?

My best advice would be ensuring the role suits you, when applying sometimes we get caught up with the company rather then what the company actually offer you and how it can help you in your career. When applying for me it was really important finding a company with aligns with my values. It's really important when applying that you research the company and know why you want to work for that particular company. To learn more about firms, it's beneficial networking or following people on LinkedIn and asking them.
