Maintenance Engineering Apprentice Review

Maintenance engineering focuses on ensuring machinery and equipment operate efficiently and reliably. Daily tasks include performing routine inspections (PPM) , diagnosing issues, conducting repairs, and implementing preventive maintenance schedules. Maintenance engineers also analyse system performance, manage spare parts inventory, and ensure compliance with safety regulations to minimise downtime and enhance productivity.

My programme is very structured as each unit is set out and there is certain criteria for me to meet. As long as we keep on top of paperwork, the workload is very achievable. However, PLCs is a difficult topic to learn as it is hard to find teachers. I also feel that James Watt college has room for improvement in terms of their organisation.

My employer provides immense support from supplying all of us with laptops to weekly meetings with our managers to keep track of our progress and any queries/complaints the group have. Reflective reviews is a very effective way which we communicate our progress to our managers, telling them the knowledge, skills and behaviours we attain alongside personal development.

James Watt College/BMet’s tutors are very knowledgeable and great at teaching. They have taught us many skills and provided so much knowledge. However, there has been some issues with the communication and organisation of our units, for example having to change units before completing them which leads to lost knowledge and slowed progress when returning to old units.

I feel that it will prepare me a lot for work as a Maintenance Manufacturing Engineer as it has taught me the skills and knowledge needed for day to day tasks. I have also learned other skills such as communication and teamwork which will prepare me further for work life.
