Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
We usually had a few presentations explaining the divisions as well as training in key skills for bankers including excel and presentation skills. Furthermore, we did many sessions where we presented on a given topic. Moreover, we usually had a Q&A panel with various people as well which was really useful as the small class size allowed most questions to be answered either in the event or afterwards where we could reach out to other employees.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
With the many presentations, networking sessions and panels, I got a deep understanding of many roles and even was able to decide what role I wanted by the end of the experience. The employees were also very genuine and didn't try to sell the bank as something its not, but rather recognised it for its merits and gave good explanations as to why they enjoy working there. In addition, the breakout rooms model was good for this.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I feel like I definitely developed my presentation skills through both the training sessions as well as the wealth of practice we got to do as this allowed us to really apply what we learnt. Furthermore, as someone who was unfamiliar with excel, the crash course they gave us was definitely valuable as a foundation of some the features provided by the software - for someone such as myself from a coding background, I feel like I can now successfully use Excel documentation without any problems.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
3/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The general atmosphere of Nomura is quite formal, reserved and hardworking. People like to get on with their work, but they also seemed very collaborative and open to learning and teaching new things to constantly improve. Moreover, the facilities to get involved in initiatives outsides of work is quite vast and this allows Nomura employees to get extracurricularly involved heavily in the things that they are passionate about. I am personally impressed by the culture and would love to join the firm.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed my insight as it was really useful. However, at the same time it was a lot of work, and definitely not easy at all. Because I have exams coming up, I found it difficult to balance these commitments - that's one tip I have to anyone who decides to take part in a spring week make sure you study and are ready for your exams before your spring weeks start to optimise for efficency.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nomura
I would definitely say to be open-minded and try to learn as much as you can about the firm. The application process is not just them deciding if they want you - it is also for you to decide if you would like to join their organisation. This is why it's important to think critically of what you want out of a career and whether you really want to do what you may consider you drream job.
