Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

On a day to day basis I do a variety of tasks including programming, deployments, managing cloud infrastructure and attending/running project activities and meetings. This can include writing python scripts, dealing with AWS resources, writing SQL stored procedures and communicating with a variety of different people from different roles and backgrounds.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I do enjoy the program a lot. The work is interesting and there are always new things to learn or further develop. I feel supported by my mentors and have amazing opportunities to both develop myself and give back to my local community through volunteering opportunities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

In my apprenticeship I have developed my programming skills - especially python within the workplace and Java within university assignments. Additionally, I have developed a variety of different soft skills, like being able to present to senior members of the company, interact with different staff members and collaborate on different projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The program is well structured. I spent 1 day per week on university assignments/lectures/labs/learning and spend 4 days out of the week on work based projects.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a sufficient amount of support from my employer. I have supportive mentors and managers who are able to share knowledge, experiences and support in new situations to help me progress within my career.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is enough support given from the training provider when working towards my qualifications - particularly my skills coach who works on a 1-1 basis and is always available to support me if I have any issues or queries.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualifications helps to develop a number of academic and soft skills within the digital and technological sector. This allows me to become well versed in a variety of programming languages and be able to adapt to different problems/tasks posed within the workplace. Not all assignments align perfectly with my expected job role, however this offers an insight into different areas within the wider sector.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I get involved in a variety of volunteering opportunities through my workplace. I am able to attend different student support events to promote apprenticeships, speak on panels and teach programming within schools. Additionally, there are networking devops opportunities promoted and hosted within the wider team to meet other individuals within the sector. There are other opportunities for networking and sports teams to also get involved in to tailor to your interests.

Why?
I feel supported within my role and have a great community of people around me to develop my skills and learning. I enjoy the apprenticeship and feel it is a great opportunity to develop. There are numerous opportunities to give back to the local community and support others in finding roles that are a great fit for themselves.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
Be yourself! It’s important to bring your whole self to work as it allows for different perspectives and backgrounds to work collaboratively - often resulting in new and imaginative ways to solve problems and complete tasks. Diversity across the work force in all aspects results in new opportunities and learning experiences.
