Overall Rating

1.6 /5

The Overall Rating is the average of all the ratings given in each category. We take those individual ratings and combine them into one final score!

1/5 - Overview of Role
2/5 - Skills Development
1.8/5 - Structure and Support

Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
1/5
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
1/5
Not at all. The programme is not what it's advertised to be. HR run it and offer no support but buckets of criticism. If you don't have thick skin you'll quickly learn how to hold your tears in.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
2/5
Yes. My excel proficiency has improved and all the usual kinds of tech skills necessary in a corporate environment. These improve by working on things you're asked to do and not through the help of the bank or the irrelevant courses you're sent on.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
1/5
Not organized or structured at all. There is an illusion of structure through regular emails from HR but you'll quickly notice how changes are made so often and without structure. It happens so often that the organizers of this change don't even know what is happening.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
1/5
From your line manager and the actual team you work in support is variable. You could have a great boss but given the way the programme is structured HR are your real bosses.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The support is ok. There are nuances to doing an apprenticeship in financial markets as the structure organised by the training provider seems to be generic across every type of apprenticeship. Often you're forcing things into the mold provided by Fitch.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
The qualifications do not help whatsoever. You will do the CISI examinations however as they are necessary for a role in a bank, the content involved in these is helpful.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are but you often hear about events after they've happened.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Standard Chartered to a friend?
No
Why?
I would not encourage a friend or family into an environment of such uncertaimity and constant change. Perhaps in a few years once standard chartered find a structure that works.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Standard Chartered?
Don't do it. there are other great options out there where you will be offered support, a proper career trajectory and a guaranteed job. Remember that just because you've done a apprenticeship with standard chartered you are not guaranteed a job at the end. FYI, Standard Chartered previously ran a tech apprenticeship that mysteriously ended (perhaps a sign of what's to come with their other programmes). Out of the four people on it only one got a job.
