Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The EY SIP summer internship involved a business a placement in the business in the assurance division. I did some basic work calculating figures for the profit and loss account and balance sheet accounts. I was included in meetings, socials and there was a big induction for all starters at the beginning. the programme had a virtual theme because of the pandemic but was mixed client work and home working which worked really well overall
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes I was certainly given a lot of responsibility during my internship. I was given projects to work on by myself and I enjoyed this although it took a while to learn complicated concepts and how my work meshed into the overall picture. I was given help when i needed it to understand what I was doing. I was also working in team projects alongside people of different levels of senior rank and people of my own age also

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt lots and lots of skills in my placement about the work in assurance and insight about thw company. This further developed my knowledge and research from the application process. The main skills I demonstrated were problem solving, communication, team work and meeting deadlines - I had these in my skillset before but the programme helped grow them further. It was great getting to know more about business and drive my passion for finance further

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Yes I had a lot of support and guidance during my internship. It was a bit daunting at first but ultimately I was pleased with the amount of support I was given. I had a great buddy who I could talk with often who answered my questions. The induction event helped outline what was needed and i found people to be approachable and friendly. I don;t think support or help could have been much better really

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The culture and atmosphere trhoughtout my placement was great. I was made to feel part of the team and this was good as the placement had a virtual feel but I did not think this devalued from the experience in any way and I got to understand EY and what made the firm a good place to work - I was very impressed by this really. I would recommend the firm to someone as a great place to be

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed the placement for sure. The people were great throughout - my colleagues in the teams and also with the other interns. I enjoyed the internship, and learnt a lot about the firm and work I was doing. I learnt so much about the day to day job in assurance and this was my main goal before the programme - apart from getting a graduate job also! So yes I did enjoy the opportunity very much

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Go for it! You really have nothing to lose applying although the process is quite long and hard to be honest.
I would say to others to look into events and explore the EY website and understand as much as possible about the company and the work that is done. I learnt a lot whilst doing the internship and asking lots of questions - this is really worth doing as people listened to me and answered my questions
