Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
my role involves working 12 hr shifts which includes weekend work. no day is ever the same and i am always learning new things. the jobs i do include mechanical, electrical and plc. on weekdays the work i do is mainly reactive but small planned tasks are also done like testing fire alarms and rcds, on the weekends larger planned jobs are completed like servicing or other projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
i really enjoy the programme, most of what you learn in the classroom can be transferred to the workplace. the first year at college was very enjoyable as it was learning practical skills 4 days a week and i made some good friends. the 3 years after that was day release.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
i have learnt lots of new skills. the obvious skills would be problem solving skills aswell as mechanical and electrical skills. i have also improved my communication skills a lot as have to work with many different people on a day to day basis. every day as an engineer is a learning day

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
the programme is well organised. the first year i didnt spend any time at work, i was at college the whole year learning practical skills ready for the workplace, this year set me up nicely for when i went into the workplace and started doing tasks. after the first year i was assigned to someone who came in for regular meetings to review my progress
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
i receive lots of support, i have timely reveiws with my manager who will ask if i have any worries or problems, they will also relay any feedback they have had about me. i have adequate time at work to complete college work and can take days off to complete work if required.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
a good amount of support, i was assigned to a tutor at college in the first year which i then had meetings with every 6 weeks to check on my progress. if there was any problems they would help me out and set a plan on how i would overcome them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
the qualifications i have done definitely do help. the first year at college taught me a great amount, especially regarding safety which is very important. the qualifications like the hnc are also helpful as they give you knowledge on the theory behind the practical aspect which helps you understand some of the job more.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
yes, there are 2 team days a year where the engineering department will have a day out which will include activities, food and social time after. also there are other events which happen within the workplace such as summer BBQ's, football matches and pool tournaments which help bring people together
