Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Audit trainee, working within a small department within the wider BDO audit team. Training through Kaplan to gain the ICAEW ACA qualification. Work on all stages of the audit, from planning through to completion. 2 month long projects on average, with teams of around 8. Exposure to multiple areas of the audit file.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The team organising the bookings for exams is overworked and too busy to cope with the number of trainees they're in charge of. I have had to wait months on end for replies to simple queries. My exam resources are never available to me on time and this has effected my exam performance
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
The support provided by management varies between sectors and it is luck of the draw. Some managers will provide lots of support and some will even make it harder. Most are understanding as they have gone through the same thing. The internal qualifications team provide little to no support to anyone.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The kaplan team is on hand for anything you may need. They provide lots of resources and are always available to answer any questions you may have. If you aren't performing well in tests they'll reach out to provide help. There is additional resources available to anyone who wants them.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BDO Supports its employees as much as it can. The internal structures are built to do this. The areas which BDO lack in are no fault of their own. There's opportunities to go above and beyond for those who want to. There's always training available. The people are friendly.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
Consider the firm's values and whether these fit into a daily life you can see yourself in. Do your research across the sectors, there's lots of departments doing lots of things, it may be worthwhile hunting through them to see which would suit you best. BDO are looking for people who fit.
