Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I work in a small department within my firm where we focus on what is essentially grant audit. From this, we advise our clients how grantees can improve the efficiency of their expenditure. My role is generally to test a sample of expenditure against pre-set criteria to ensure it is meeting the correct standards expected of them by the grantor.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme. The studying is a challenge, but it is very gratifying finding out that all the hard work has paid off and an exam has been passed. I also really enjoy the travel opportunities which come with my role, as I have seen places I wouldn't normally visit.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The main skill I have learnt is a deeper understanding of the finance and accountancy spheres and how they function. I have also been able to seriously improve my IT skills and have been able to build on my French. This is because both are necessary in my day to day role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
College has generally been well structured. There is usually a pre-set curriculum to follow and then a bank of questions to answer which prepare you for the exam. I would prefer in person/ blended learning for all exams, as opposed to self-study, but I have passed all of the self-study exams I have taken to date.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer has been very good, often giving extra time to ensure that exams are fully prepared for. They have also helped me when I have had issues with the exams/ college, by following up and ensuring that the correct outcome was achieved. There is also a dedicated team which have been useful to contact when necessary.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
They frequently check in and ensure that I am completing the necessary tasks required to obtain the apprenticeship. They also do have a team of tutors on hand to help with exams, should the need arise. They also have a very robust hub which contains all the information required to succeed in the exams.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I have learnt many processes and key terms of my industry as a direct result of studies undertaken through my provider. The information I have learnt in the exams has also helped me gain a better understanding of how the world works. As a result of this, I am able to complete my role to the best of my abilities.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes, I am part of the social committee. I help to organise, and then attend, social events as part of my team. I am also involved in the communications group for my department, helping to keep everyone updated. Finally, I play in a hockey team which the company enters into the corporate London league every year.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The ethos here is much better than reports of other large firms, such as those in the big 4. BDO strives to be a part of that big 4, but is also not losing sight of its core values. Working here, I feel like part of my team, and not just a number.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
Make sure you understand the core values of the company, as they are greatly regarded and are often asked about during the interview process. Be prepared to study hard alongside work: it is not an easy process, but is not unachievable, the hard work does eventually pay off if you stick to it.
