Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves programme managing my team's policy areas and ensuring that they all hit their agreed quarterly targets. I also head the stakeholder engagement by organising team meetings and visitations of the team including minute taking and writing up briefings and agenda for future meetings that will hold.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoyed the programme in a sense that it enbaled me to learn a lot of life skills. Whether I benefitted from this fully I am not sure only because of my experiences of already studying the subject and also have postgraduate degree. However, I have learnt a lot about time management and building a project from its foundation.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a few and developed a range of skills during the apprenticeship. The skills that I have learnt are stakeholder management and programme facilitation. Stakeholder management is the way that I engage with partners and programme facilitation is through knowing what to do in moments that are uncertain or when a sudden change happens. I have developed my communication and listening skills and also confidence in talking to network.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme was well structured. It allowed me to understand my organisation and also scope out areas that require for me to build my EPA project. There were some activities that I saw as irrelevant for the whole objective of the apprenticeship and maybe would require reviewing the activity and question whether it is a value for apprentices.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I received tremendous and overwhelming support from my employer who were really engaged and helpful in terms of providing me with my needs to successfully accomplish my apprenticeship. My line manager was really helpful in terms of providing me with the time and space to focus on submission and also allow me to focus on key projects such as my EPA prep and examinations.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I received immaculate support from my coach. She has been really helpful in terms of making sure that I feel prepared for any activity and EPAs. I enjoyed our conversation which focused on developing an action plan for my project and also guiding me in terms of making sure that I achieve my full potential.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It has helped me tremendously, especially the final few months/second half of the apprenticeship as I feel like it was tailored perfectly towards what I was doing for my role. I became more confident in talking to stakeholders as a result of having the safety net of understanding what it evolves. But it also made me confident in doing business cases and project briefings too.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, there a lot of opportunities to get involved in out of work activities. As a civil servant, I believe there's over 1000 networks that I have access to such as gym, department football team, board games club etc. There's also networking groups such as future parent and ethnic diversity groups.

Why?
Civil Service is a world of its own where there are endless of opportunities for anyone to work. You don't have to be a specialist as training will be freely provided for you and they ensure that you get the most from your posting. I also love the perks such as job security and welfare benefits such as pension scheme, parent leave etc.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
I would encourage them to do their research on the department that they are joining and see what they have on offer for you in the short and long term run. The department makes the working environment, so do be sure to study the benefits and what they can offer you as it is not the same across the departments and attached companies to the civil service.
