Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role as an apprentice is to shadow technicians, offering assistance where I can and learning as much as possible. There are many departments in Gatwick, that I have spent 3 months on each before moving onto the next.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I absolutely love it. I started my apprenticeship apprenticeship at 25, so I had worked a fair share of jobs. This by far is the most enjoyable and satisfying programme I've been a part of. Everyone around is so welcoming and wants me to succeed, and I've made a lot of friends on the way.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt more skills than I can count. Hand skills from machining, electrical installation, welding, mechanical installation and maintenance. And more logical based attributes such as mathematics and engineering principles. There is a huge wealth of knowledge I have learnt and I feel I haven't even sratched the surface yet.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Its done very well. Before I started my four years, I was taken around the airport and told exactly what my 4 years would look like. My first year would be college based, second year - dayshifts at work making my way through the department with day release at college. Third and four year moving onto shift work whilst working towards a HNC and NVQ
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Everyone around me wants me to succeed and my employer is no different. The company has an apprentice manager, Dave, who is incredibly supportive and offers his help and guidance where ever we may need it
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I recieve a great amount of support in terms of training. At the moment I am working towards my HNC and EPA. I have regular meetings to check my progress and guidance if offered to me if needed. I always know where I'm at in my progression and what needs to be done to succeed.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualifications I am doing and have done are tailored to the tasks I'll perform at work. College has helped me problem solve with engineering knowledge, and repair problems with several hand fitting and machining classes.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes. Gatwick has a great environment with many colleagues quickly becoming friends. Many technicians play gold with eachother, go on night outs. Gatwick even create team building days out, where even next week many technicians are going out to T5 Cricket and Bowling

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Gatwick Airport to a friend?
Yes
Why?
You will learn a huge amount of knowledge in engineering in an environment that's welcoming and enjoyable. You will work on interesting machines and equipment, be paid a great wage while achieving several qualifications.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gatwick Airport?
Find your passion for engineering and show the interviewers that. A lot of them are technicians and them seeing someone who's keen and genuinely has an interest and gain enjoyment from engineering will go a long way.
