Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Every three months I move departments around the airport. We have 7 sections to learn from over the course of the 4 year scheme, this includes; baggage engineering, hvac, airfield and LSS. Every day we are expected to contribute to the work and grow strong friendships with our team.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I love my apprenticeship programme. I wake up excited to go to work and constantly wonder what I will learn next. I would recommend anyone who has an interest in engineering to honestly consider this opportunity when searching for work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I’ve learnt a various new range of new skills, focusing on mechatronics as a whole. I have learnt about loads of different electrical and mechanical systems in depth and feel confident in teaching others due to my senior engineers being extremely helpful and interesting.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Extremely organised. My manager has structured the entire programme ridiculously well. Us apprentices are treated with nothing but respect and are made to feel part of a team. In the three years I’ve been here, I’ve never had any complaints.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
My employer constantly supports me. Every month he checks in with me to track my progress, my section reviews, what I have learnt and how I feel. I feel very comfortable in the position I’m in with the people around me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Lots, this year we’ve had a couple of issues based on hnc lecturers not being in. My employee has had lots of words though and the college have helped support us as they understand their staffing numbers are low.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It’s helped me learn the fundamentals extremely well. This would include basic hand skills and knowledge on components. When at work, I can transfer these skills over, allowing me to be a better engineer in most aspects.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
We have social events e.g. go karting, bowling and paintball. This is with all engineering departments across the airport. We also have Christmas meals that allow all engineers and managers to meet up.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Gatwick Airport to a friend?
Yes
Why?
You are offered so many opportunities at Gatwick. You are never stuck in one position. You may venture out if you’re fed up of a section or even job role. You’re not limited at all and in general everyone is so nice and gets on well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gatwick Airport?
Be yourself. Be on time and show enthusiasm. These will allow for you to build a good relationship with people resulting in them wanting you to achieve and be the best engineer you can be.
