Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
During the first year of the apprenticeship, college is full time. Throughout the week, we work four days studying towards a level two qualification similar to an NVQ. During these lessons, we learn about technologies and skills such as PLC programming, hand tools, lathes, milling machine and fluid power systems (Pneumatics and Hydraulics). Once per week, we study towards a foundation degree where we study mathematics, computer-aided-design and quality systems.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
The programme is enjoyable. The skills learnt are interesting and useful.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, I have developed many new skills using equipment such as lathes, PLCs, pneumatic systems and hydraulic systems. Alongside these; my knowledge of mathematics, quality systems, manufacturing processes and computer-aided-design have significantly been improved. This has helped me understand skills useful in my job role and how to perform tasks that I may need in the future.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The programme is structured well. The organisation of the apprenticeship on behalf of the company is done well, however the organisation of the training provider can be poor, negatively effecting learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
High levels of support are provided by my employer. We have regular meetings together and business matters are regularly discussed to keep us in touch with operations at the business while we are attending college.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Teachers are willing to provide assistance, making the learning experience engaging and interesting. The structure of the degree can sometimes be awkward, given several modules are based upon working activities that we have not been exposed to or experienced given the first year is served at college.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
A lot of the knowledge learnt on the foundation degree can be related to tasks that I assume will be useful in the future. Mathematics, manufacturing processes, computer-aided-design and quality systems all seem to be important within the role and knowledge learnt can be related to academic papers that I have read regarding activities that would be completed in a role similar to my own. Until I start working at the plant, I will not know fully how useful they are and how often they can be applied.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Extracurricular activities, such as trips to an engineering convention at the NEC, have previously been arranged. At the start of the year, a team building event was organised where all apprentices around the UK attended.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BMW Group UK to a friend?
Yes
Why?
BMW is a great company and is very forward thinking. The company invests a lot in new technologies and training, allowing large amounts of new skills to be learnt in comparison to other companies. So far, I have enjoyed the apprenticeship and look forward to moving into placements next year.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
I would recommend being enthusiastic and open minded. Having a hardworking and team working demeanour, as well as an attitude that is willing to ask questions and challenge things, will help.
