Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As a maintenance technician, I am responsible for checks and repairs on the engine production line, whether assembly or machining. I have to monitor and work on the machines used in production whilst carrying out other necessary jobs like making parts when there is a fault and they are required.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my programme a lot. I believe it is a once in a lifetime opportunity with many benefits that allow me to develop into the real working world whilst getting the best training.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learnt many hand tool skills, engineering principles in all areas such as electrical and mechanical. My training has allowed me to implement my previous maths and science skills into operations, assemblies and repairs. I have learnt new skills such as pneumatics, hydraulics and PLCs and how to apply them to my job.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Due to it being our first year, we spend 90% of our time at the college. Our days are mostly always structured as we have different trainers on different days meaning we are able to learn and apply ourselves to different subjects each day. Our manager makes frequent check ins while we are there so in the case of an emergency, we are able to address and deal with that.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer is very supportive by frequently checking in on us at the college, being there to communicate if we have any issues and also dealing with them in the best way so we are getting the best training possible. In the case of any serious problem or emergency, we are able to contact our employer which is reassuring.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
We receive help from our trainers when studying for our qualification, however I find that we are expected to be quite independent which is understandable.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
It has widened my understanding of engineering massively. I now have a good understanding and skill set in many areas which makes me more confident knowing I will be working in the factory after. There are many different parts to the qualification, however the overall training helps me to implement it in the workplace and understand the different areas.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We have visited professional networking events such as the NEC which hosted an engineering convention. This widened my understanding of different areas and companies - some even had connections with my company. We were taken on a company, team building holiday at the start of the year which helped me feel more comfortable in my role and with my colleagues.
