Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
At the moment I am in my 1st year of my apprenticeship, this means I am at college fulltime apart from the holidays, which is when I am at the airport. My job at the airport is to maintain different aspects of the airport to help it run smoothly, these aspects differ depending on what section I am based at, these sections include, baggage, Airfield lighting, specialist systems, LSCA, HVAC, and shuttles.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really like this apprenticeship and could not see myself doing anything else apart from engineering. I like the fact that i can apply my knowledge that i learn at college to my work at Gatwick. I could not rate this apprenticeship any higher and i have loved every second of it so far.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt many new skills since starting the apprenticeship and these skills are getting further developed due to being at college. I am also gaining brand new skills since starting college as I am working with new people and working with different pieces of equipment/tools which are widening my knowledge on engineering.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
For a 1st year being at college my programme is very well structured as i have a timetable with all my lessons for college, and during the holidays my boss gives me enough time for me to decide whether i want to take annual leave or to work at the airport, which is when he will decide which section i will be working on.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
we get a huge amount of support from our employer, to start with they supply all of our uniform that we wear at college and at the airport, furthermore, our boss comes into college about twice a month to see how we are getting on and we are to report to him for any concerns or worries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Our training provider gives us a big amount of support, especially in practical terms, when working in the workshop our lecturers are very keen to help us out where we need it. The college provides us with laptops and books where we can revise/do theory work and they also provide a library for where we can do out independent studies.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
The qualification that i am working towards is vital in me developing as an engineer as it helps for me to pass my end point assessment and become a qualified engineering technician. All the skills and knowledge that i gain from my apprenticeship will help me develop in my role and perform better,
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
At college there are several after work/school events that go on that i could attend, recently the college set up a 5 a side football tournament for students and apprentices to compete in. There are several clubs that go on including maths club, chess club and several more which are all free to attend.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Gatwick Airport to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would without a doubt recommend Gatwick airport engineering as it has all the facilities for you to grow as a person and as an engineer. The training is excellent and you can apply the knowledge and skills that you gain at college to the airport. This is 100% the best thing i have done.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gatwick Airport?
When applying for this job role you should just be yourself and not try to impress to much. I would show them any work that you may have done at home or school which may link to the job role and i would state what strengths you have which may help you develop in this job.
