A range of hour sessions of insights of the sectors at the BDO accountancy firm, speaking to colleagues located at a range of offices throughout the UK and hearing their experiences and motivation why they chose BDO. Mentoring sessions for advice and building up my network with peers also linkedin advice
To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?

I thoroughly enjoyed this work experience. I valued the amount of interactivity between me and my peers, even though it was virtual, everyone engaged and had their cameras on. It was great increasing my network through LinkedIn also the tips and advice I gained during this work experience
How well organised was your work experience?

It was very organised, meetings started on time and there were enough breaks during the day. I like how it was organised through teams rather than via zoom or any other apps and if I had any technical problems, an email to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] would fix the problem. i laslo like how there were internal and external speakers
How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?

It made me realise which sectors are not for me and how my options are not limited, from tax to audit to advisory. People from all backgrounds can get into finance, even if I did do a finance-related course at university, it is still very much possible to have a career at BDO
Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?

This was a work experience so I was not paid to take part but the amount of knowledge I have received after this work experience is something I will use for the rest of my life. It was virtual so I could do it at home and there were no costs to travel.

What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?

I learned about how to build my own personal brand, and use it to show who I am to future employers. Developing skills and core values that I can use when I want to introduce myself is important as it is leaving an imprint on my first impression of others.
Company Culture
How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?

I learned about the company's core values and its aims as an accountancy firm. It was great hearing from colleagues from partners to school leavers (that were in the same position as me a few years ago). As well as why BDO is good to work at, the reason why they chose to work at BDO was very enlightening
Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?

There was a buddy lunch with a few colleagues and my peers which was quite insightful to hear their stories and projects they are currently working on and also a Mentor session where a colleague listened to our situations and gave us advice. I value how personal it was and the fact they listened to us.

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would, it seems their support system is great. It is a firm that doesn't discriminate and takes in anyone who is willing to put in the work. It seemed quite relaxed and the colleagues had a good relation with each other, through their jokes and nonchalant tones with each other
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
I would say be confident and introduce yourself strongly. What is your brand? To know BDO's values is great so you know what they are looking for in people. It doesn't matter if you don't have experience, they care about the effort a person will put in
