Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Being within business controls, the role contributes to risk management by identifying and designing control methods to mitigate risk within the various lines of business, that include commercial banking, trading divisions, capital markets, global banking and corporate banking.
On a day-to-day basis, I would shadow a new staff member from the various lines of business, who would assign me tasks and projects, so I directly contribute to business controls' overarching goals.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
In short; yes, most definitely.
Everything from frequent contributions in meetings, to being offered projects that extended over weeks of the internship, interns directly aid meaningful tasks.
Exposure to managers of all levels almost gives an impression of a flat hierarchical structure. 1:1 coffee chats with managing directors were a norm and encouraged.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Through work experience, I have found my academic experiences in economics and accounting translate well to the banking environment, where I can see concepts learned in class being applied in a practical setting.
Moreover, the ability to practice with the perennial tools of finance, such as Excel is invaluable, and simply can't be replicated outside of the working environment.
