Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role as an apprentice is to learn on the job as well as through college, Currently I attend East Surrey College 1 day a week this is where i am studying for my HNC, the other days i am at Gatwick, this is where i work as part of a team, my main day to day roles is shadowing the technicians learning about this system we work on as well as getting involved and carrying out work under supervision.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy being at work, to be able to learn on the job is probably the best way of learning as you are physically working on the systems, this has helped me develop my skills and understanding. Working as part of a team has helped my develop as a person.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt loads of new skills, some of these are being able to communicate and work well as part of a team, I have also learnt a lot more about the systems we have at Gatwick, for example the fire alarm system to our bms system which controls the heating for Gatwick.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well, as an apprentice you still feel part of a team when your at work, I think this is because everyone in the business is aware of the apprenticeship. With going to college one day a week we have the flexibility to have the time to make sure we have the time off to attend as working shift can be tiring.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Loads, if there is anything that we require are employer with in reason will make sure we have all the tools to develop our skills, we have made sure we have access to some CAD software, which can be costly but the company accommodated this so we could carry out our assignments.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

We have constant communication with the college, if I needed to talk to them about an assignment or anything they are very good at communicating back, they provide loads of resources for us to learn as well, well executed lesson plans and well structured lessons, all lessons will be uploaded electronically so we have access remotely.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I feel that learning at work is more beneficial as I am learning on the actual systems I will be working on. The college work is good to learn the theory side but some of it isn't relevant to the job I will be doing, but it does give me an understanding of other areas.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are loads of STEM events, Gatwick are very good at promoting the apprenticeship scheme, I often attend events where we either go to schools or have schools come to Gatwick, this is where we set up different Engineering activities and educate the kids about how roads are vuilt to how to change a light fitting.
