Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
An average working day within the environmental team was always varied with new challenges to overcome daily. As of this it kept the me interested and eager for the next day.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
While on my placement I felt that my colleagues had my best interest for learning in mind by recognising my skills, while not expecting too much of me at the same time. I felt I was able to make the most out of the year I was with them.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Due to the variety of work I have been able to gain new skills and build on existing I had from University. In addition to this I have improved my ability to collaborate with members of the team and have felt a real sense of helping where I can.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Throughout the year my line manager would keep track of me and regularly ask if I wanted and experience in other teams of the company such as the bridges team/ surveyors’ team with my training in mind. I was also given a member of the team to be my mentor who assigned me work and gave guidance when needed.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The atmosphere of my team was friendly with most of them wanting to help me where they could with their different specialties. Informal meetings were held every Thursday to keep in touch with everyone and have non work related conversations, this made it easier to collaborate with the team over the pandemic.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
While on my placement I was able to feel more comfortable in a working environment having gotten on so well with the team I was with. as well as learning a variety of practical and technical skills I can make use of. I couldn't ask for more from a placement year.

I recommend at least getting some experience in as many teams as you can. this has allowed me to get a feel for what it's like in the company as a whole.
