Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am involved in technical support of prototype build vehicles in the luxury automotive sector. Within this I support updates required for computers within the car during their development phase prior to series release. I am also developing my High Voltage working skillset and will further progress my qualifications in this area in line with the advancements of the automotive sector
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am very grateful that I receive lots of support from my team and manager. I love working with cars, therefore having the daily opportunity to work within the luxury car sector is very important to me. Apart from my day to day role,I also have the opportunity to get involved in local charity outreach projects

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed many new skills, including but not limited to:
Automotive Harness building & repairing alongside overlay harness construction & fitting.
Decision making related to updating of vehicle computers during their development phase.
Prototype High Voltage vehicle shut down methodology and practical experience
External working with suppliers & project stakeholders including tracking supplier deadlines and ensuring they are met.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The work-based element of my programme is very well structured - I have an apprenticeship plan to mark out my time in what I should cover at different points. I also have placement opportunities mapped out. The education side of it is a lot harder in terms of structure due to a breakdown in relations between 2 of my education provider which has lead to a switch in Level 6 provider at late notice.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer is very supportive when required with the completion of my apprenticeship. I have regular meetings with my manager to track my progress alongside annual reviews of set measured targets which are business, function, department, team, and personally focused with different weightings. My employer was very supportive in finding a new Level 6 education provider due to factors out of control of the company
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
The first 2 years of my degree (delivered as a HNC & HND) were well structured with good support packages in place. I was not able to complete my degree top up at the university intended at the beginning of my programme - this has made completing the degree more difficult due to timetabling at the new provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I have a good amount of transferrable understanding across the discipline which are important in being an electrical engineer. A majority of the content of the units is not directly transferrable to my day to day role, however, this is to be expected - being on an apprenticeship, the majority of my work learning naturally takes place in the workplace.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, following covid, regular social events have been reintroduced including meals out, go karting and attending local events. There are also networking and ambassadorial events available to those who want to get involved - of which I do, as they are very beneficial for personal development. For those that want it, there is an onsite gym at work and support of cycling to work.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Bentley to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Bentley are keen to develop apprentices to become a full working part of the company once out of their time. This results in a high level of personal and professional development for apprentices. The opportunity for placements across the business is invaluable in understanding how the different functions work together.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bentley?
Researching a company properly to understand their current and future plans and product portfolio is crucial in demonstrating a knowledge of the company and a keenness to join the company. Competency based questions at interview are very common in apprenticeship applications so it's important to be prepared to talk about different situations.
