Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Two days a week are spent studying towards the degree, this includes lectures, labs and tutorial. The other three days are spent working for Dyson as an Undergraduate Engineer. In your first two years you are put into 6-month rotations so you can experience the different engineering types which are Electronics, Mechanical, Software and New Product Innovation.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme is very enjoyable, being able to study and work at the same time has many benefits. I enjoy being able to put into place the content learnt in lectures during work. Other aspects such as the social side are also great, with the UEC (Undergraduate experience committee) organising many events such as evenings out to Bristol and day trips.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to use various programmes such as LT Spice or Matlab. These are used in the workplace and training was put in place to develop these skills. Other skills such as surface mount soldering have also been put in place more independently with resources provided to complete.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well structured, with a good balance between study and work. Modules are well organised so content required in other modules is covered in advance. The year is divided into two semesters. You have four modules running at once, two that run throughout the whole year and four others that are split with two in each semester.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is plenty of support, in the workplace. Each Undergraduate has a line manager and technical mentor. You can always speak to either of them with any issues you may have in work or any technical challenges you are facing. Your work team are also always happy to provide any assistance they can.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

On the degree side, you have biweekly tutorials in small tutor groups (about 7 or 8 students) and weekly seminar sessions run by the lecturers to help work through the problem set questions. As well is this, each year group has a student support advisor (SSA) who you have monthly meetings with to check up on your wellbeing.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It definitely does help a lot, often content covered in lectures I find popping up in work. As I go through the course I am sure that this will keep occurring. My tutor has also been there to aid with any understanding needed for work that has not yet been covered in the degree.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

As mentioned above the UEC (Undergraduate experience committee) organises many events. This includes day trips to places like Cardiff or Oxford or evenings out in Bristol or Bath. There are also formals which occur twice a year. There are also clubs that include football, volleyball, touch rugby and big band.

Would you recommend Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in engineering as it is a hands on approach to learning. As it is a general engineering course it is perfect for anyone who is unsure of the type of engineering they want to do as not only is it covered in the degree but in the workplace as well.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology?

Most importantly show that you have a passion for engineering. They are not looking only for A* students but people who are more well rounded and want the hands on approach. Make sure you thoroughly look into what the course entails and be ready to ask questions in the interviews if you have any.
