Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a trainee tax advisor in the international tax and transactions team. On a day-to-day basis I work on things like tax computations and company structuring advice. I am specialised in the energy and infrastructure department so my focus is on clients in the oil, gas and nuclear industry.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I would say that I enjoy the programme to a good extent. This is because i enjoy working with the people that i work with and have developed some strong relationships. The work i get involved in is challenging and there is good support available when i begin to struggle.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have developed my communication and presentation skills to a much higher degree. Since i started, i have began to present infront of large groups and have hosted numerous calls/meetings. My overall confidence has improved because of this and I now worry significantly less about public speaking than before I joined.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Very well organised. The process from switching between work and study is very efficient and the teaching provided when on study is to a very high standard. The overall structure of allowing me time to study and flexibility with exams is very good and this is important to helping me switch between exam and work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
There is adequate support available such as the apprenticeship coach team and the peer support network. You are easily able to reach out to the apprenticeship team if you need anything. However, as of yet, i have yet to need to contact the team and therefore cannot fully comment on the support they provide. But, from what i have heard from others it it good.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Significant amount of support is provided by my training provider. The study offered is structured well and split into different phases being knowledge, application and exam preparation. This is useful as it allows you to focus on all different skills required to pass the exams and if you do need additional support, the tutors are very approachable.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
At the moment, the exams that i have set are less relevant to my role as a trainee tax advisor. Further down the line when i sit higher level corporate tax exams, qualification achieved from these exams will be more relevant to my role and therefore i am more able to comment on this then.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes there are numerous opportunities. For example, recently i attended 2 professional networking events which were great and provided valuable insight. I have also attended a few social events after work with other people on my program and these have been great for building personal connections. I have also played for the EY football team in recent months.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is a great culture at EY with focus on people as well as the financial benefits. You receive great support from your team and are made to feel extremely welcome at all levels. There is great social opportunities available and these are only increasing now that restrictions have been eased.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
Ensure that you have performed adequate research of the company and make sure that you know the key principles used at EY. Research the role that you are applying for and make sure that it is the right role for you. However, this is not essential as EY are very flexible about you changing service lines
