Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

From day to day I work with my team and other teams to prepare UK tax returns for our clients. I help out with answering chat messages that are sent to us by our clients asking for tax advice. I also help with a lot of the admin side of the business to help make sure that the services we provide run smoothly.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme because it has a great mix of responsibility and support. When I first joined I was surprised at how much responsibility I was given but also very pleased with the amount of support that was there to help me. As I've started receiving more work and responsibility, that level of support hasn't dropped at all because everyone I work with is always willing to take time to help me understand my work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since I started my apprenticeship here at EY I've learnt a lot of new skills and developed current ones. One of the most important skills I have developed since joining EY is communication because I interact with my team and others in person, via video calls, emails and messages every day.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is very well organised as it has the work aspect and the learning and development side split well. I'm given more than enough time to spend on courses and study leave in order to complete any professional qualification and I've been allocated a tutor from the training provider who makes sure that I'm on track with the professional qualification. My manager from work has also met the tutor so that everyone's on the same page with how much time I need to spend on learning and working.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is a lot of support available from EY in many different forms. I am well supported with my learning as I'm given more than enough study leave to attend courses and revise for exams. On the job, everyone who works for EY is happy to spend time helping me with my work and understanding.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There's a lot of support available from the training provider. They run a lot of courses for learning the content before exams and they also direct you towards a lot of revision materials and question practice. They provide tutors who can speak to you about your progress and put plans in place in order to help you catch up with work if you're falling behind. We have monthly meetings with skills coaches to check in on our progress.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification is absolutely necessary in order for me to complete my day to day work. In the Tax industry there are a lot of different rules and legislation that can be very specific. Although I've learnt a lot through colleagues in the day to day work, the qualification I'm studying towards educates me with the bulk of the knowledge to carry out my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is plenty of extra curricular activities to get involved with at EY. There is sports clubs, cooking clubs, art clubs and many more. There is quite often socials that are funded by EY for employees to go out for food and drinks with the others from our department. There is also a great fundraising initiative where all employees are also given 2 days pf excused leave a year for fundraising purposes.

Would you recommend EY to a friend?

Yes

Why?

EY is a great company with lots of opportunities to meet other great people and progress in your career. The culture of the company is so welcoming and friendly and it's a really positive place to spend time working. EY also now operates as a hybrid working system where employees can work from home or in the office so you can choose whether to commute to the office or not.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?

My advice would be to explore the values of EY as a company and get to know these very well. Look out for opportunities like the Business Academy work experience week where you can get a taster of what life at EY is like and it will also help you towards applying for a role at EY. Try to think about why you suit fit into the role you're applying for at EY and why you would fit into the company culture.
