Recommendations & Advice
Would you recommend Bentley to a friend?
Why?
The entirety of Bentley I.T. builds its applications using OutSystems (or sometimes PowerApps), and this allows those who may not be as experienced in software development to build applications quickly -- which is great -- but as of currently (time of writing this review), OutSystems is not in high demand, and skills that are learnt from using it are not transferrable to other companies. The job description for when I applied for this apprenticeship, mentioned prior experience in programming (which I do have), but this experience really wasn't required as all software development is done in no-code. I was quite disappointed because myself and other apprentices came out of bootcamps and universities with the hope that they would be able to better their coding skills by gaining experience or working with senior developers, but that just hasn't been the case -- in fact, no one else in my team actively codes. A lot of the other apprentices raised concerns in their ability to achieve the apprenticeship criteria because of this.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bentley?
I would just say, don't expect an entirely futuristic, alien-like I.T. landscape with the latest technology. A lot of Bentley's I.T. landscape is old -- very old. It will definitely be a far-cry from Apple or Facebook. The I.T. offices aren't that great either 👀😆.
Don't expect to do a lot of code if you intend to do software development. If you do wish to pursue the low-code route, then Bentley will be heaven for you!
Ask as many questions as possible! There are a lot of acronyms and terms that may overwhelm you.
You will have to get used to working in a company with over 4000 employees with a huge campus, it takes about 15 minutes just to walk from the carpark to your office!
Try to learn basic German, because a lot of our employees are from there!
Keep calm and just try your best :)
