Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I’m working as a receptionist in a Premier Inn hotel. Premier Inn is part of Whitbread. We deal with receiving guests, checking them in, helping them in any way we can. We sell rooms for the night and serve breakfast on site. We deal with issues and have to carry out cleaning and maintenance jobs as well as being front of house.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I enjoyed the program because it allowed me to have a better understanding of my job, it was only taking a few hours per week and it took me a year to get to the final exam with some diploma recognized worldwide. It will be useful in the future for me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
Yes, we have gone through many topics involving our job. The apprenticeship allows us to go deep into subjects we are familiar with. Data protection, rules and laws. I had to integrate many elements that were tested after a while in order to pass on to the next phase of apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well, it was easy enough to stay in touch. By email or phone. The learning phase was through computer where we had 3 different websites to go through. Some virtual classes that can really get you back in gear for mathematics or english. The amount of work was reasonable between each session.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Enough I guess. We had many managers coming and going so it was more for me than because I was asked to do this program. I knew where I was going and I have been determined to get it done seriously. I wouldn’t say the level is hard but there are exams to pass.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
Excellent support, there for me whenever I needed it. I requested at some point additional tests to get me ready and they complied. We go through every category of modules to learn one by one and we then get exams involving every topic, it is suite a big chunk to digest.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
In every day it makes you stronger and confident. You have all the tools available and you know how to use them. People couldn’t let you think you don’t know your job because you mastered everything that deals with reception. It’s also positive to succeed with the program to show yourself you’re doing good.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Very rarely. There are dinners or Christmas parties but they exclusively invite people from one site and it remains pretty small. The bonding occurs at work especially during day shifts where front of house and housekeeping are working hand in hand. Some sites also have a restaurant attached and they are more likely to get together.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Whitbread plc to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Great company to work for, they look after you. Whitbread offers many advantages and Premier Inn especially, it goes from employee discount in any Premier Inn across the world to schedule and hours worked around your lifestyle. If you want to study and get from 5 shifts a week to strictly week ends it’s possible.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Whitbread plc?
If you have the opportunity go for it. Just be yourself. Be honest about your goals and objectives knowing that in Whitbread it doesn’t matter where you come from, it doesn’t matter who you are, you’ll be treated with the same respect due to everyone else including staff members or guests.
