Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work on a large complex programme aimed at reforming the probation services in the UK. I provide support to a project manager in a commercial capacity that involves planning, scheduling governance controls for Board meetings, that are concerned primarily with procurement activities.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme - I enjoy the balance between on and off the job activities and it has helped me endless amounts in terms of understandign the role in which I am in.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
My apprenticeship has linked very well with the day to day tasks that I carry out. As someone that had no previous project management experience, I found that the modules in the apprenticeship have really helped my understanding of the wider context of my role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Very well organised - Our training and development officer is very organised, preps us very well and has great communication with my line manager and centre of excellence.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
From the centre of excellence we get lots of support. My line manager doesn't have a great deal of involvement but I am given the flexibility to make sure I get 20% off the job learning.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have received lots of support. I have known what to expect at every step and have felt supported and that I can contact my training officer at any time!
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
As above - I feel that all the modules are relevant to what I am expected to do in my role. I feel that is has helped me put it all into context as to how and why we do what we do.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Civil Service to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I enjoy the work / life balance. I enjoy the constant development opportunities that it gives me to grow as a professional. It is a stark contrast from working in retail for most of my previous career.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Civil Service?
That there are a lot of opportunities. There are so many roles that would benefit from transferrable skills from other work experience. To not be put off by the long interview process, it sounds scarier than it is!
