Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role as an audit trainee usually involves testing and reviewing the information received from the client - this is also what most the work I do daily is centred around. Most commonly, I work on the cash and expenses side of things, for example looking through and matching support (such as invoices) to the amounts we’ve been given.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Working remotely has been difficult but the work environment and support provided has been incredible, all which has contributed to making the programme a lot more enjoyable. I have also really enjoyed being able to learn whilst on the job, and apply the theory I learn in college to real life situations. Although there have been situations, such as when I have found the work especially difficult, I have been fully supported by my peers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have definitely been able to both learn new and develop existing skills. My soft skills, such as communication (written and verbal) have improved, as well as my organisational skills. In addition to this, I have been able to complete excel training which has drastically improved use of formulae and thus time management. Working to meet deadlines has also meant I am more able to work calmly under pressure.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
BDO and the work experience side of things and as company is well organised. However, the college/exams side of things isn’t as structured as it could be. A lot of the time students don’t receive the support we are told we will, and BPP as an education provider have regularly let us as students down with their delay in responses and providing us with the correct materials on time. Luckily, we receive a lot of support from BDO.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Although we began working from home, the support has been incredible. We have been given any equipment we could need, from laptops, mobile phones and monitors to a desk and chair. We also receive well-being support through training, and my manager is always there to check up on me. The Buddy system also allows us to be able to always have someone we can go to with questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
During college, we tend to receive our study materials at home and then a couple days off as study leave for self study. During this time, someone from BPP usually reaches out to check up on us. Although, support is still quite poor, the materials arrive late, and a lot of the time emails sent to the professional qualifications email are rarely responded to.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The content covered in my studies is very useful in helping me perform better in my role. I’m able to apply my knowledge to real world situations, such as using information from my Tax studies when testing the VAT section of a client. It also helps with developing my organisational skills as I have to balance working and studying
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are lots of social activities, especially around festivals such as Christmas. However, these are limited due to Covid. Even with the limitations, there is always some type of event going on, from Partner Q&As, to virtual cook-alongs and yoga classes. There is a work social media website called Yammer which is also useful for social and professional networking.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The atmosphere and support I have received from BDO has been incredible. The peers I have worked/spoken to thus far have always been really kind, understanding and willing to help. This has made the overall experience really enjoyable and created a work environment that is very pleasant to work in.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
I would say to be yourself. Everyone here is really unique, and that’s what the employers are looking for. As long as you have a visible drive and willingness to learn, you should have no problems. Also make sure you do lots of research - both on the company, it’s values as well as the clients.
