Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
I spent most of the apprenticeship as a transport team manager, overseeing a team of 30 driver and clerical staff. I was responsible for my team’s performance, legal compliancy and health and safety, whilst dealing with daily operational challenges and managing projects. I built an effective team by building strong relationships, maintaining regular communication and feedback, and coaching colleagues to fulfil their potential.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Personally, I did enjoy the programme, but it also highlighted the areas or work that I prefer to work in. By the end of the programme my understanding of the role meant it did not interest me as much as at the start, although I have now learnt many new skills that are transferable to different roles.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I learnt many new skills on the apprenticeship. I studied ideas and theories regarding building relationships within a team - creating rapport and strengthening trust with colleagues, which then allowed me to influence their behaviour, goals, and work ethic. This knowledge then expanded into understanding the organisational culture and business strategy, from both a high level view, and from a team perspective.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Whilst the course was structured there was also a degree of flexibility. The Coop ensured I would gain a broader understanding of the logistics operation, from warehouse to shop floor. Some areas of the programme were delayed due to Covid, but the structure meant that I could jump straight back into the programme despite the operational issues.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The Coop were particularly good in ensuring I was supported throughout the programme. They supported me by ensuring I had sufficient study time, time spent in the role for hands on experience, as well as meetings with other apprentices from depots across the country. There was always somebody there to listen to any concerns of queries.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
My training provider was always an email away from providing support. Despite some issues at the start of the programme, they scheduled regular on-site meetings, and the face-to-face learning was really beneficial. This level of support was continued all the way through to my end point assessment, and gave me the confidence to throw myself into the role.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
I have an excellent understanding of several key areas needed to be competent in my role. To that extent, I feel like the qualification has been beneficial to me, and allowed me to progress far quicker in performing and managing people. Several people in similar roles expressed they were amazed at how quickly my knowledge and understanding of the role progressed.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We have a sports and social club at the depot. The club regularly arrange events ranging from fishing to theatre and comedy shows, to go karting and football matches. This is available to everyone that works within the depot. It really helps bring people together and build relationships across the working environment.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend The Co-op to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The Coop provide excellent support in developing your career and fulfilling your potential. I have been able to move around between roles at the depot to build a well-rounded knowledge of the operation. They are also very supportive regarding family-friendly rota's, and support you inside and outside of work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to The Co-op?
If you remain curious and enjoy working on improving an operation, then you will go far. The Coop are very supportive of people that are open and passionate about what they do, and will give you the opportunity to find the role that is right for you. Remember to be yourself, always.
