Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work within the maintenance department on one of our machining lines. I respond to breakdowns reported by the production team and look at the computer control of CNC machines, gantries and logistic modules. I also look at long term targets for improving proactive and reactive maintenance as well as various process improvement projects.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I have particularly enjoyed the practical elements of working with a maintenance shift. This helps to put the theory and practical learning into context and allows me to develop my skills in a real world setting. Working for a large employer provides many opportunities for further training and qualifications outside the apprenticeship requirements.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed many key engineering skills throughout my apprenticeship and continue to grow an understanding of maintenance and the business management of a modern production facility. I have also had the opportunity to present our apprenticeship program to prospective applicants and parents at several recruitment events and information evenings.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The content and structure of the apprenticeships at The BMW Group are well planned out and structured in a way to best develop your knowledge and skills. Managers are happy to change and modify the existing placement plans, even at short notice, to facilitate any projects worked on or areas that are particularly enjoyed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

There is good support from managers both within your local department and also from the apprenticeship team. High quality resources are readily available and managers keep in touch regularly regarding any open issues. The theory elements of the apprenticeship are regularly reviewed by the apprenticeship department and feedback is given to the training provider.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training providers could provide better support during the theory courses. Good support through the Covid pandemic helped remote learning continue uninterrupted but better communication with our employer and the university would improve the experience and allow for more structured learning. Overall the course is well planned but improved communication would help to improve the standard.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The theory content of our qualification is useful for gaining an wider understanding of control engineering however a more focused course would be beneficial. The course in general is not directly related to everyone’s day to day work and a greater variety of modules would improve this for most.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Many events have had to be cancelled this year due to the Covid pandemic. Under normal circumstances The BMW Group provide a good range of extra-curricular activities and social events. A particular highlight would have been the 20th anniversary of our plant which has been delayed due to the current resurrections in place.

Why?
The BMW Group provide fantastic opportunities for apprentices and treat you the same way as all other associates. Extra training and qualifications are available and you can develop a wide range of skills whilst earning a great salary and enjoying other benefits such as the company car scheme and personal pension plan.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK?
Apply as early as possible and take time to review your application. Focus on demonstrating your soft skills and highlight your personal experiences that will help you as an apprentice in the workplace. Spend some time researching the plant/location you are applying for to show you have taken an interest in the business. Most importantly, be honest!
