Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
We are placed in different zones in the hangars at British Airways and work with an engineer or a group of engineers. This involves getting stuck in with the task or watching over the engineer.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy the programme a lot as it combines both the theory learning with our modules and the practical learning in the hangars together making it really well balanced and enjoyable to ensure you are getting the best of both worlds

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
My hand skills and have developed a lot since joining the apprenticeship and I’m hoping to improve them throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. I’d also say my team working skills have developed whilst working with the experienced engineers.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Our programme is really well structured as the aim of the first year is to get all of our modules passed and then after to work in the hangars. This way we can apply to knowledge from our modules into the hangars to help us further.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Our employer supports us a lot by always providing opportunities for resits if we haven’t passed an exam and are always quick to respond to any queries we may have. We also have regular meetings to ensure that we are up to date with what’s happening
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Our training provider provides a very high standard of teaching so that we can learn as much as possible and pass our modules. They also make sure we are on track with NVQ work as well to ensure we are reaching our designated targets.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
We carry our both out EASA Cat A modules and also our NVQ work with our training provider and both are very important. Our modules help us gain our A licence which allows us to become licensed engineer after our apprenticeship. The NVQ work allows us to apply the knowledge.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
We have had a few apprentice forums which allow each cohort to present what they have learnt to the senior management at British Airways. A few people in each cohort can get involved and help with the presentations and organisation of the forum.

It’s a very welcoming company and also allows your to develop so much as a person and an engineer (or your chosen career). You get loads of support and opportunities to get involved with what’s going on.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Airways?
Make sure to be yourself in your application. Use each of your experiences over the past to your advantage and ensure you make it as detailed as possible. There’s loads of people wanting to apply so you’ve got to add something that others won’t to make you stand out.
