Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Worked as a software developer intern in the GMIT division. This involved daily meetings with my manager and co-workers to discuss plan of work as well as a place for me to ask any questions (since everything was remote due to the pandemic). Primary focus was completing software development tickets ranging from small bug fixes to new projects.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Due to the small size of our team and the amount of bandwidth, I was given a fair amount of responsibilty whilst on my placement. Some of these responsibilities involved completing a large front-end project (direct exposure to how the UI interface would look) for the business, fixing bugs and helping development on automated testing. All tasks that I completeted were for the benefit of the company and were released into the production environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
With no prior knowledge to software development, working at Nomura has allowed me to learn many different skills and tools needed to become a developer. This included learning new programming languages and frameworks as well as becoming independent and resourceful. In addition I learnt the basic financial process and procedures used within a bank.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Depsite working completely remotely, I was given a large amount of suport and guidance when needed. I was provided with daily 30 minute (or more) long meetings with my line manger to run through daily updates and problems. The wider team responded promptly to any questions or inquiries around work. There was also an abundance of resources that I was allowed to use both internally and externally. General attitude to supporting me was great.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Due to the pandemic I had to work remotely, this meant I could not experience any of the usual events and activities that would be held in-office. No comment.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
The team and everyone I met far exceeded my expectations. I initially thought I would be left to my own device, this however was not the case. Everyone was really helpful and considerate. Work was very fullfilling and allowed me to really develop my skills. At times you will need to do the 'boring stuff' however that is the case with every job you do. I would definitely recommend Nomura for an internship.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Nomura to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Nomura
With zero prior experience with software and coding (other than during my free time) I would say that you should not feel intimidated when applying here. Everyone is given a fair chance. I would defintely work on your ability to communicate your passion to work at Nomura (or the role you are applying for). Much of the interview process requires showing soft skills as opposed to your technical ability.
