Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role is to maintain and service any aircraft that requires maintenance. This changes everyday and can be from filter changes to structural work, from checking tyre pressures to engine changes. It is a shift pattern of 2 days 2 nights working 37.5 hours a week, then having 4 off
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The programme was run okay but lacked communication from British Airways as regards to jobs. Department rotation was good and allowed me to increase my contacts and learn different aircraft but I have not done a full days work due to ‘trapping’. Work is easy and not done a hard days graft since starting

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my hand skills with sheet metal work and learnt skills using computer software post completion of job. I have learnt systems and skills to be used on many different aircraft which allows me to be challenged each day. The ability to learnt something new each day is a bonus

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Programme is structured well with frequent meetings with assessors which allows me keep on track with my NVQ and overall personal development. The arranging of my courses for my A license was coordinated well but lacked communication at times but none the less organised well with good communication at times.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Received support for my A license with courses put on and support with my NVQ with assessor meeting frequently. Regarding any development as an engineer at present l, no support as you have to ask the questions. I’ve had no harness training or MEWP training so I have had to turn down jobs as I can’t get involved. This hinders my development
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

When working towards my A license, I received good support with regards to putting on courses and an instructor but when it came to my NVQ the assessor wasn’t always clear about what I needed to do and recently went back on his word. Would tell me to do 1 thing and so I did it but it was wrong when he marked it
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I don’t think it makes me perform any better than before. The NVQ is there as written evidence of what I’ve done/what I need to do. I guess it helps expand my knowledge of aircraft as I need to work accords different systems but it doesn’t help me perform any better
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Most of my time at BA has been through covid and therefore furlough. Over the past year I have only worked 4 months and therefore there hasn’t been any social activities to get involved with. Not that I’ll get involved with any anyway as I’m not interested in them

Would you recommend British Airways to a friend?
No
Why?
Not much work goes on as it’s only casualty/service checks. Not work whole shift since being there as all too occupied with when the trap is. [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] The BA appos are institutionalised which is not a good thing as if there moved company’s, thereby won’t be used to working and will come as a huge shock
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to British Airways?
To have a look at other company’s ::as BA is stuck up and think they’re the best when they are far from it.[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the Higherin Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]This is pre covid and they only had 4 daily’s to do in a day. It’s pathetic!! Thank god for COVID so BA can actually get rid of the dead wood and restructure:::
