Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
My role includes: topping up oils, carrying out transit checks, Extended range Twin engine Operational Standard checks and ensuring that the aircraft is airworthy before take off and after landing.
I would have to enter the cockpit and check the ECAM screens to see if there are any hydraulic, electrical or engine issues.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
Working with people who are experienced in a field has made me excited to go into work so I can actually learn off of someone that is in a role that I am passionate about
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
This includes:
Hand skills when working with sheet metal such as riveting, bending, rolling and cutting.
I have also learnt how to use tools appropriately without damaging aircraft components.
I have learnt how to work as a team
I have learnt how to communicate clearly
I have learnt how to take a leadership role
I have learnt how to read data and aircraft instruction manuals.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
They help take pressure away from work loads where you wouldn’t necessarily get help from other places.
Having a team of people who genuinely want you to do well is so encouraging as it makes you also want to do them proudly.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
With my field of work, my employers have seen so many people through the apprenticeship and I believe it is because they go above and beyond in order to help you
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
All of these people have been teaching for years so have truly learnt how to expand the knowledge of their students
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
Spending a year going through all of the different modules the training provider gives has enabled me to take on almost any task around aircraft. Having qualifications allows me to feel competent whilst working on the aircraft which in turn allows me to perform better.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
There isn’t an official sports team for British airways however a few of the people on my course have banded together and formed a football team where we play in a small league
