Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I work in the assurance service line and this involves working with a team to provide audit services to a large number of different clients, mainly within the Oil and Gas Industry. Given the level I am currently on, I assist managers to complete the technical work and I also take a lead role on some engagements. I help review work and train more junior members of staff whilst completing my audit testing, which tends to be the more technical areas.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the programme for many reasons, both personal and professional. Being on the programme has allowed me to work towards attaining a globally recognised accountancy qualification as well as gaining vital hands on experience at on of the biggest firms in the world. This experience will be invaluable as I begin to carve out my career once my exams are complete.
During my time, I have also met friends for life which has been great. The social aspect of being on this programme has also been a big factor in my enjoyment of it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
During my apprenticeship, I have been working towards my Chartered Accountancy qualification and have therefore developed several skills and technical knowledge in relation to accounting and finance.
On a more granular level, my written skills have improved given the various reports and memos I have to write. My leadership skills have also excelled recently given my more lead role. I have developed my communication skills, both written and verbal during my time. On a personal level, my self confidence has also improved.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The ICAS training as well as the internal training received could be better organised. There are sometimes issues is sorting out training days as well as exam dates with the training provider and these can come at times where we are in a busier period of work and therefore will miss out on that challenge.
Once on the classes and exams, the organisation and structure of the learning is second to none.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
I have not received too much support from my employer during my time on the training element of the programme. The caveat to that is I have never asked. The training and exam element of the programme, I have taken too well and have never felt the need to ask for support and therefore this cannot be faulted.
The support whilst working can be improved at times and there is a culture of unrewarded overtime with very little "thank you" messages given. But support is always offered and your line manager is always a phone call away if assistance is needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The training provider (ICAS) are excellent at providing support during the exams and classes, albeit some of the lecturers are better than others. They offer one to one chats during the exam process and give great feedback on mock exam attempts to ensure you know and fully understand where the additional marks can be picked up. I have never felt I have needed to ask for more support as there is adequate support provided, however, I know additional support would be there if required.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I could not do my role without the training provided by ICAS. They have given me the technical knowledge I need to excel in any accounting role. I do not think any other provider would have given me this and I feel proud to have worked so hard to be near the end of my training.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
In the 5 years I have been working towards becoming a CA, I have been to several ICAS quiz nights, ICAS events etc which have been fun and a great chance to network and relax with my peers.
Internally within my firm, I have been part of the social team as well as a group dedicated to keeping people positive through fun challenges.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
Why?
EY have given me the chance to complete my Chartered Accountancy training whilst working for one of the biggest professional services firms in the world. There are several opportunities within the firm to progress whilst doing the training and afterwards. Whilst you do have to work hard, it is rewarding as promotions are always available. The social aspect of my work is great and I have made friends for life while working here.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
Do it. It is a fun place to work where you can feel included. They will provide you with the chance to become a CA and work for a firm which will look great on any CV.
You will have to work hard but if you come in to work everyday with a positive attitude, then it will be worthwhile. Working here is what you make of it.
