Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

The reminiscence coordinator is equivalent to a care manger my rol involves leading and managing a team of approximately 30 staff, from both night and day shifts. On a day to day basis I complete payroll, assessments for new residents and ongoing assessments for other residents. Ensuring all team members are trained in line with legislative requirements and that the residents that live in our community receive the best possible person centred care that incorporates meaningful activities that gives the individuals a sense of purpose.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I found the leadership and management level 5 qualification extremely enjoyable. I liked how the course was structured and that there was small refresher online tutorials that helped. The units for the qualification were all collated to ensure that met the criteria of my specific job role and were all relevant. I particularly enjoyed the research project being able to choose a topic that was important to me made it very easy to complete as this held my interest.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The skills that I have learnt whilst studying the leadership and management level 5 qualification have been how to as a manager lead my team by using different styles of management, using these skills I have been able to mentor my team and utilised previous teaching skills developed these to coach my team to get the best possible outcomes for the team to reach their full potential.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The leadership and management level 5 qualification is very structured. Which to myself was very important. I completed the course in a timely manner whilst still being able to work full time with role that often means working approximately 80 hours a week. The units were always well explained by my tutor who even through the pandemic he always made time every month to ensure we had at least an hour conversation on the phone to make sure I understand the next steps to take.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

At Sunrise senior living there are 8 managers including myself, and I could not of asked for a better team to support me. They made sure every month they new the unit that I was to complete that month and they would insure that the manager that had the most updated knowledge in that particular area would support me, either by allowing me to shadow to gain further experience or observing my conduct and give me honest feedback.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Whilst completing my leadership and management level 5 qualification my assessor from Paragon was probably the best person I could of asked for. His knowledge of my role was outstanding. And on my monthly reviews and tutorials his way of explaining everything just made the units to follow so much easier.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The leadership and management level 5 qualification has helped me tremendously. I am able to adjust my leadership skills to support different team members in different ways. I have always been a great believer in leading by example and was new to the role of management, this qualification has now allowed me to do both by giving me the right skills for the job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Sunrise as an organisation value the whole team and understand that extra-curricula activities are important in not just the development of the team but also in the work life balance. During the pandemic when team members have only been able to be at work and at home, the company have realised that the team were under added stresses and so insured that in the community every week we had socials, events and competitions that all could join in even a tic toc video for the whole company to take part in.

Why?
At Sunrise senior living it is not like going to work, it is like going to see your extended family. Everyone supports each other and it does not matter the role they are in. The training that is available is outstanding from induction from the in house trainers to being able to access higher qualifications from external sources.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sunrise Senior Living?
When applying for a role at Sunrise senior living read through the job descriptions as there are very varied roles that are available in the community and sometimes you may think that they only have care staff but reading through the other roles that are available you may discover that your skills and knowledge may fit ins different area. Also within Sunrise it’s not just a job it’s a career with development plans in place to up skill all team members.
