Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Everyday is different working in a laboratory setting. I worked on experiments for my own project, however these often span over many days working with cells so whilst you may start your work on a Monday, you would finish and obtain your data on a Friday. During the pandemic when on-site time was limited I may have been asked to help with my team's experiments too. In the office my work would range from analysis of my results, maintaining my lab book, writing protocols, attending any meetings (could be company-wide or just a 1:1 with my manager) or preparing a PowerPoint for a future presentation.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
In the beginning I was slowly introduced and allowed to shadow scientists around the laboratory which made me feel prepared for when I would carry out my own work independently. After gaining confidence in what I was doing and as time progressed, I was given more responsibilities and was able to work without supervision (of course I could always ask for help). As I had to work on my own project, it was a lot of responsibility but I did not work on any big/ vital projects for colleagues.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Working in the laboratory I learnt many useful cell biology technique such as cell culture, western blotting and immunocytochemistry. I was introduced to new equipment that I had not previously used in university labs which was exciting!! By presenting in a weekly team meeting I quickly improved my presentation skills and the feedback which I got from my manager also helped me to understand my data and how I can interpret it. This made me more confident in interpreting scientific data

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was very well supported both by my manager but also by the wider team. Whilst my manager gave me project specific feedback and demonstrated lab techniques relevant to my work, other members on the site were always happy to answer my questions about a protocol or show me how to use equipment. I also had a Graduate buddy who I could talk to over the course of the year which was good to have someone to chat to informally and on a peer level.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company has great culture. You could get involved with groups such as the Women's Network or student committees for your own self-development and meet colleagues outside of your specific department if you had spare time in your calendar. In the laboratory itself everyone was very friendly. You would have a chit-chat once in a while if you were free. Due to the nature of lab work sometimes it would be very quiet but that is just so you can focus on your work!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I had a really positive experience during my placement year. I wanted to work in a laboratory setting in a pharmaceutical company so the job description fit my goals to a T. I had the opportunity to develop both as a scientist from the skills I learnt however I also gained valuable transferable skills from networking and leadership workshops put on specifically for students. It showed that the company cared for the student's personal development and not just for the work they were doing.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend MSD to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to MSD
Make sure you include skills and experiences in your CV that are relevant to the specific role. Don't hesitate to say you're good at something because that may help you land the position! For a lab-based role having previous laboratory experience is beneficial but not essential as long as you demonstrate you have the necessary skills. If you manage to land the job, remember to ask lots of questions and ask for feedback from your manager as this will only help you improve.
