Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I’m an undergraduate engineer which means I am taking an engineering degree at the same time as working in various dyson engineering teams, learning both on the job and from the university. For three days a week I am in the workplace working on real life projects, and for the other two I am studying

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy it very much, the support is good and I’m lucky to have a lot of other great people on the course which is nice. The work can be difficult at times but that’s kind of what you sign up for

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I’ve learnt lots, including programming, how to write a risk assessment, how to work in a hemi-anechoic chamber, and various things that come with working in a team. I have also improved my maths and communication skills so far

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Very well, we have a clear idea of what we’re going to be doing for the next four years, and of the end goal and of the steps we’ll be taking in the mean time to achieve the goals

How much support do you receive from your employer?

A lot, all of the line managers I’ve had so far have been really supportive, especially with covid messing people around quite a lot in terms of when you’re allowed on site and what you can do. As a company they’ve always ensured that we have as clear a guidance as is possible to give, and make sure to keep us up to date

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

A lot, we receive lectures 2 days a week, and have special days dedicated to logging the work aspect of the apprenticeship, meaning we know what we’re doing and we also know what it will take to get us there

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

So far even though I’ve only been here a few months some of the skills I’ve learnt have come into fruition almost straight away. Things like programming which we did a few lectures on before we started working I’ve already used extensively in the workplace, which is really handy

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes, obviously at the moment things are quite limited due to the pandemic, but there’s been plenty planned for after and also everyone is doing their best to come up with things we can do despite the restrictions, like this weekend we’re having a virtual cocktail making lesson

Would you recommend Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Really good so far, haven’t been left wanting for anything, and so far would happily say that I am enjoying myself

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology?

Try and stay up to date on some of the maths you learnt in school, otherwise it can be a bit of a shock. Other than that, you will be a lot busier than your friends in the short term, so you have to accept that you won’t get the standard university experience. At the moment tho that doesn’t really matter, because as soon as you’re in you are a step ahead of a lot of other people
