Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I work in the engineering team supporting energy storage research mainly as a design engineer. The day to day can be extremely varied involving plenty of design and development work delivering the capabilities required to conduct the research happening in the wider team. Generally a mixture of design research, CAD, design for manufacture, and hands on build and testing along with time to learn.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The workplace side of the program is excellent, there are endless opportunities for learning and project choice and i feel i my development as an engineer has been efficient and effective. The ownership of projects is really rewarding and provides valuable experience of responsibility.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Since we are the first year through the program there have been many changes along the way, often inspired by our own feedback. When changes happen it is clear as to the reasoning and they are normally well communicated by Dyson Institute staff. Most aspects of the degree provided by Warwick Manufacturing Group are often poorly communicated and planned.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

The staff at the Dyson Institute are permanently helpful, supportive and approachable. They are constantly striving to improve the institution and student experience clearly putting mental health and well-being first.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My line manager is always supportive in allowing me to get the experiences i need to achieve in my apprenticeship. Our bi-weekly 1:1's help with this.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

It requires reflection and continuous improvement which is something im might otherwise not have done so certainly works towards making me a more rounded engineer

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Plenty, we have set up various societies and clubs since the start of the Dyson institute and there is always something going on. I have been involved with founding the ski club, surf club, wake-boarding club and adventure society which has been a great experience and not only for the enjoyment of the activities we organise but also the challenges involved with setting them up.
