Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
From Day 1 we are given responsibility and exposure to real Dyson projects. This involves working alongside full-time engineers to solve and develop projects from an electrical, mechanical and software point of view. This can be sitting in the office working on designs, schematics and attending reviews or working in the lab on testing and validation.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy all aspects of the work side of the program. The study side is more of a challenge however this is expected out of an engineering degree.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Yes, I've learnt hard skills such as MATLAB coding, schematic design, schematic layout, LabVIEW etc. I also picked up soft skills such as office and workplace ettiquette, leadership of projects, communication etc.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
2/5
The programme is new and still finding its feet so there have been quite a few bumps along the way. The course has completely revolutionised the scene of higher education however there were definitely issues along the way. These were sorted out quite quickly most of the time.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Lots. There is support from lecturers, wellbeing advisors, academic tutors, workplace line managers and workplace mentors. Lots!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
The lectures can be quite stressful and confusing however support from Dyson engineers and technical staff is always there. The main issue would be having to find the time in our busy schedules to meet these staff on top of a full week of lectures and work.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
There is not a great deal of overlap with the work and study however this is normal as at university you learn theories in much more detail than they are applied in the real world.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
yes, sports, art, eating, all sorts!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to a friend?
Yes
Why?
All round, I have has such a good experience at The Dyson Institute and I am SO glad that I didn't go to university. The smaller group sizes and the amount of attention and 1:1 mentoring that you get at Dyson is something that no university could provide. I am so glad with my choice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology?
Be curious. Read, watch and work on engineering or design related projects as much as you can!
