Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
3 days a week I work as an engineer, towards completing my workplace projects or tasks. 2 days a week we have lectures and study time dedicated to understanding the principles behind engineering from electronics to mechanics
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Other than not having other students doing different degrees, the programme is very enjoyable. We have many societies, especially given our size, with very good funding. This, combined with a nice culture in the company means you can find enjoyment both the company and the university setting.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
So many, from PCB design; to more CAD experience; and all of the interpersonal skills to facilitate them. Also within my rotations I've had the opportunity to be qualified in LabView and I know friends who have had AWS certification.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
At times, the partnership can seem to be lacking from those at WMG. However, talking to other students at Warwick, we seem to get much better treatment with regular opportunities for feedback that do make a difference. In the workplace, it can vary, but as time goes on more line managers are just getting better and better at being supportive of our work and apprenticeships.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Mentors, Student support advisers, Line managers and the whole team within the Dyson Institute are always available to help. There is a lot of support available.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
WMG provide an increasing amount of support in the apprenticeship aspect, alongside a reasonable amount of support academically. However, more useful academic support has been given by our engineering support within the Dyson Institute team
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
For such a small uni there are so many. There are a lot of active people so that means a whole range of sports (surfing, skiing, running, football, and cycling to name a few), alongside this there are other groups within the company and the university such as a board games club. Furthermore, there is an ongoing effort to engage with other local universities for sports and other social events.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology to a friend?
Yes
Why?
If they are keen for a practical approach to engineering, for such a vocational subject it is invaluable how much experience one gets. Also, being able to leave in a position of having money saved instead of student debt cannot be understated.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology?
Just try and enjoy the process where you can. It's trying to find out how much you can perform as an engineer and if that's what you enjoy doing then just have fun.
