Overview of the Experience

Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
4/5
A number of virtual sessions lead by the HR department at EY, which varied from learning how to write professionally to a general overview of the structure of the firm.
Also, we benefitted from current apprentices and graduates giving their experience at EY through Q and A sessions as well as their career paths that led them to EY which was particularly helpful.
To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
3/5
The energising and "breaking the ice sessions" were fun but I think the programme could have benefitted from more interaction and it was only until the last day when we actually learnt what it meant to practically audit a firm which I enjoyed as there was a lot of speaking in small groups.
How well organised was your work experience?
4/5
It was pretty well organised with only minor technical difficulties which is impressive given that it was all done virtually. The structure was well put together and you felt that everyone knew what they were doing and were well prepared.
How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
4/5
I think it helped give more detail to what assurance was which was definitely useful. The explanation of the path to, and the benefits of a professional qualification was very clear which definitely helped illuminate the benefits of this particular career path.
Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
5/5
Yes - they were very generous - about £150 for three days, where we were getting a lot of benefits through the virtual experience. Travel costs were n/a as it was virtual.

Skills Development

What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
3/5
I learnt more about presentation skills which was really useful as lots of first-hand examples were applied.
Professional writing tips was also important as it helps with the transition to the working world.

Company Culture

How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
4/5
There was a huge emphasis on the culture at EY being friendly, diverse and inclusive. Effort was made give lots of examples from people who work there who seemed to be very honest which I appreciated. You certainly got a feel for the type of workplace EY would be - through their buddy and councillor programs especially.
Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
4/5
They encouraged us to share one another's LinkedIn but I am not sure how relevant that is to 17 year olds. To their credit, they were more than happy to respond to further questions via emails. Meeting other employees aside from the main leaders of the program were made available through smaller group work which I felt was probably the most effective part of the program as they were very relatable.

Recommendations and Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The program is very well run - they could have included more interaction and more case studies but it is also very informative both about the firm and assurance in general.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
Show some passion for working at EY, practise numerical tests online - but also get ready for a lot of cooperate paperwork if you get in! The amount of declarations and forms you have to sign is ridiculous for three days virtual work experience! Otherwise it is definitely worth applying if only to get used to the way in which firms select employees.
