Volunteer Mentor Review

As a Volunteer Mentor, my role involves supporting pupils' academic progress, wellbeing, and personal development within a school setting. On a day-to-day basis, I work closely with teachers to assist in classrooms, run targeted interventions for students who need extra support, and help with behaviour management and pastoral care. I also lead extracurricular activities, mentor individual pupils. I take part in regular training and development sessions to build my leadership and professional skills.

I was given a significant amount of responsibility throughout my placement. I supported pupils on a one-to-one basis, led small group interventions, and played an active role in classroom activities. I was trusted to build strong relationships with students, monitor their progress, and provide feedback to teachers. I also helped plan and deliver enrichment activities and supported whole-school events.

I developed a wide range of both personal and professional skills during my time as a Volunteer Mentor. I’ve strengthened my communication and leadership abilities by working directly with pupils and collaborating with school staff. I’ve also gained valuable experience in behaviour management, lesson support, and delivering tailored interventions. Additionally, I learned to adapt quickly to different situations, manage my time effectively, and approach challenges with resilience and a problem-solving mindset.

CYUK provided regular training sessions, coaching, and professional development opportunities that helped me grow in my role. I had consistent check-ins with my Impact Officer, who offered feedback, encouragement, and practical advice. Within the school, I was also supported by teachers and senior staff, who treated me as part of the team and were always willing to answer questions or offer guidance.

The atmosphere was positive and collaborative, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, reflection, and continuous learning. I always felt valued and respected, and there was a real sense of community across the organisation. Despite the challenges of working in schools, the energy and encouragement from the City Year team kept morale high and made the experience both impactful and rewarding.

It was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience that allowed me to make a real difference in young people’s lives. Every day was different, and I found it fulfilling to build strong relationships with pupils and see their progress over time. It’s an experience I’ll always value and would highly recommend to others.
