Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The entire vacation scheme was online due to Covid but the experience I think was the best considering the circumstances. For the first week, there was an induction, where we talked through all the different processses and requirements. The rest of the scheme I was placed in a project team and I helped out with whatever I could. I was given a list of tasks to do the evening before for the next day.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was very useful learning about the potential roles. But day to day, my main streams of contact were from people in my department. If I was offered to stay on, it would be in the department I am currently in, so the potential roles in different fields isn't necessarily the most useful unless I planned to work elsewhere or a few years into KPMG.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I have developed my skills on Excel alot, and have been taught lots of shorthand tricks and tips for carrying out numerical and administrative tasks much more efficiently. Furthermore, given that I worked with a wide range of people from different areas and seniority, I have been able to improve my communciation skills, which will aid me in the future.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
As everything was online, there wasn't really opportunity to socialise and gage what the atmosphere was like, as you would in a face-to-face environment. However, all the people I worked with were extremely friendly, and more than happy to help out whenever I had questions or difficulties in the work I was doing.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I enjoyed my insight alot, and found the experience very useful in developing my personal and academic skills further. I wish the insight had been a bit longer, as 4 weeks meant that once you got the hang of the processes and the workload, the scheme was soon coming to an end.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG
Don't worry if you don't think you have the correct degree or skillsets. When you go in, they expect the vacation students to not really know anything about the field and are happy to teach you the ropes.
