Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Jefferies offered a highly interactive Spring Week. The first day consisted of introductory lectures on the overall functions of an Investment Bank.
The second saw me and my fellow spring weekers arrive at 6:30am for morning meetings, before having 3 on 2 meetings with research associates and VPs. The afternoon involved shadowing researchers before having three interviews for the Summer internship programme.
The third day was hosted by AmplifyMe in which we engaged in a modelling and mock IPO competition which took up the whole day. Afterwards, members of the research team invited us out for drinks allowing us to meet a variety of Researchers of all levels of seniority.
The final day was only a half day, with a case study (taking the form of a stock pitch) in the morning.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Incredibly informative. As mentioned above, you gain a much better understanding of all the different parts of an Investment Bank by actually being in the offices and meeting professionals, than you can through online research. Jefferies offered so many opportunities to meet people across the bank, allowing you to really understand which role you might be best suited to.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
There was plenty I learnt on the Jefferies spring week. Firstly, on the 'softer' side I learnt in much more detail what the core business functions of an Investment Bank are - while you can find out good detail online, the Jefferies spring week really helped actually piece it together. In addition, I learnt lots around the day-to-day responsibilities of a research analyst - again, while you can find this to an extent online, you get a much more in-depth view through the shadowing/networking opportunities Jefferies provided.
On the more 'hard' side, there were plenty of skills which the Jefferies spring week helped me develop. This came particularly on days 3 and 4 where the IPO competition and Stock pitch case study required public speaking skills to a level I have never used before. By taking me a little out of my comfort zone, those experiences definitely helped improve my confidence in speaking to crowds. In addition, the AmplifyMe mock IPO required modelling, which helped my technicals.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Much friendlier than I imagined. While at first I found it a little daunting being inside Jefferies for the first time, the researchers made us all feel incredibly welcome (during what was a very busy week for them!). I think this gave everyone a little bit more confidence and really helped everyone get the most out of the week. Everyone appeared to put a real effort into getting to know people on the programme and it felt very easy to approach anyone.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed the insight. I think the level interactiveness really made you feel part of the firm and helped me feel that I was getting a lot out of the programme. Also, everyone on and involved in the programme was really friendly which made it really enjoyable from a social perspective.

Would you recommend Jefferies International to a friend?
Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Jefferies International
It felt like the culture at Jefferies was really highly valued on the programme, so I would really recommend just trying to be yourself during assessments and when at Jefferies. Particularly for the spring week where technicals aren't prioritised as much, it seemed really important to just try and be a positive and friendly person.
