Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The two-day scheme involved us hearing from a range of members of the firm across a multitude of areas and branches. The idea that you had to be a pro with numbers was very much demystified—which was reassuring as someone who does not have a background in Accounting and Finance. We also had the opportunity to work in smaller teams where we collaborated on tackling case studies and subsequent presentations.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was very interesting to learn about Deloitte and discover all the roles they have to offer. As someone with a law background, it is interesting to hear about some of the legal work that Deloitte supports. In addition, it is great to hear that I do not have to have a background in Economics, Accounting, or Finance to pursue a career with Deloitte.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
During the scheme, I not only learnt a lot about Deloitte, I also recognised many things about myself. One particular feature I noticed was that I had the habit of using filler words (i.e umm, like, err…) which do not add to my discussion points, and instead cause me to appear less confident. This was pointed out by Paul Gurney who provided great advice on how to avoid this so I can appear more confident and knowledgeable about the topics I speak about when presenting.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
During the event, it was clear to me that Deloitte is definitely a firm I could see myself working in. Throughout the event, I was constantly reminded that it was a “safe space” to ask questions, and share my ideas. All of my input was valued. Even when I did not quite have the answer, the feedback was given in a very gentle and guiding manner. Heating from more of the members made me realise that this kind and caring culture is experienced across the entirety of Deloitte, whether at the headquarters or in smaller regional offices.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the event and would love to interact with Deloitte further. The event was very insightful whilst still being very fun. I particularly had fun collaborating with other participants on the group cases study presentation. It was also very fun and personable to see some members present activities that they enjoy outside of work. I only wish the scheme could have lasted even longer!

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
I would advise that future participants do a lot of research about Deloitte and the work that they do, as well as be able to clearly articulate why exactly they want to be involved in that work and why specifically at Deloitte. I would also advise on practicing public speaking for the job simulation part of the application especially!
