Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day-to-day I would work on the audit of a bank within the 'Banking and Capital Markets' department of the 'Large & Corporate' division within Deloitte.
I would perform the less complex areas of testing i.e., administrative expense testing, PP&E, cash etc.
Significant amount of time would be spent collaborating and working with my seniors, discussing findings, meeting minutes and additionally planning socials.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given a lot more responsibility than I anticipated. Obviously the amount of responsibility given to placements solely depends on the manager and client in question, however, I was treated like a graduate throughout my whole time in Deloitte, given the same amount of support, but also given the same amount of opportunities.
Managers and senior members of staff were more than happy to allocate you tasks which you were interested in and occasionally asked if you wanted exposure to a different area of the audit to increase your experience and understanding of the whole audit and financial sector.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
100%. The knowledge and exposure I gained throughout my year at Deloitte gave me such a great insight into the corporate environment. I not only gained skills which improved my financial literacy, but I also developed soft skills which included becoming a team player, discovering organisational skills relating to social event planning and managing workload, and most importantly I developed key emotional intelligence skills from working with such a diverse range and group of people.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received a lot of support throughout my placement. I was allocated a buddy, a people leader and per client had a range of managers who would guide me through my work and always set me up on a task.
The senior team members placed a lot of importance on juniors understanding the work they were doing, and not just completing it. This ensured that the quality of support and guidance was maximised across every team I worked with.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture was incredible. Every person I worked with was always kind and compassionate, and always happy to help.
The workforce is very diverse, even at top management, which allows for a very collaborative environment and a very inclusive structure.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I definitely enjoyed the experience a lot. The exposure I gained and the knowledge I picked up across the year was definitely worthwhile.
The only negative was the hours during busy season. Whilst you get perks such as coffee runs and dinner provided, the long weekdays and weekends required Jan to March meant I had no social life and break from work during this period.
