Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Attended virtual presentations learning about the business. These included hearing from inspirational individuals both within and outside the firm. These emphasised the people centric culture at EY, with focus on employee health and wellbeing and personal development, as well as hearing from key stakeholders within the business (such as partners) about their own experiences and career journeys.
There was also a case study working element, working in teams to solve a client problem.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Due to the virtual nature of the internship, we were not interacting with real clients. Instead our case study work was centred around a theoretical client. Despite this, the task was still taken very seriously, and we had to have regular meetings with our mentor to update them on our progress and at the end present all our findings in a professional manner.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have developed virtual team working and problem solving skills. The case study working element of the internship involved working in small teams to formulate solutions for a theoretical client. I also learnt the skill of being able to provide structure to a conversation; collating ideas and ensuring we are successfully answering the brief. Working to strict time schedules also meant high organisation was required, as well as having to be agile and adaptable.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
We were assigned a mentor to help with the case study working element of the internship, who is an advanced employee at EY. These individuals provided advice on how to approach specific tasks, and support with any questions we faced, therefore I felt fully supported in the role (no prior knowledge was required).

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The main takeaway from the internship was the people centric culture at EY. They placed a large emphasis on the health and wellbeing of all employees which I found extremely valuable, and sets EY aside from its competitors. The atmosphere was great, everyone was very supportive and always willing to honestly answer questions and provide help.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed the internship, and would definitely recommend the experience. I was really able to gain a feel for the company culture and values, despite the virtual nature of the event. The case study work, despite being theoretical, gave a great insight into what working for EY would be like, and provided a great opportunity to network with likeminded individuals.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Just be yourself! The application process is very different to many others, in the sense that it doesn't focus on past experiences or a CV, instead surrounding your personal values, and how you go about responding to scenarios. The final interview I found to be quite enjoyable, being presented with a case study, and the assessor is simply looking for how to approach the scenario (ie. your thought process).
