Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
We used an online platform developed by EY. We had talks from different areas of the business in the morning. This ranged from partner Q and A to business etiquette to sustainability. In the afternoons we worked on a case study in groups, creating a presentation which we gave in the second week.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
We were not given any responsibility during the internship with it being virtual. Instead of responsibility, though, we were taught so much across the two weeks. We were also given tasks as well with the case study work so it did feel like we were getting to contribute to work, but without the pressure of much responsiblity.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have definitely developed my presentation skills, through the case study presentation. We had to give a 10 minute presentation in the group where we each covered a different aspect of the case study. I also learned how to analytically read an audit account in the case study sessions. I also developed my confidence through sessions on how to interact with clients.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
We were given ample support and guidance. We had sessions with a buddy twice, who was a recent graduate at EY. We also had a lot of support in our case study sessions from our mentor, who we also presented to in the second week. The student recruitment team supported us with email and on the platform for the whole duration of the internship.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture seemed very supportive. Everyone was very interested in us as people and helping us develop our soft skills and pursuing our career journey. The hierarchy was not obvious, as partners spoke to each other, managers and graduates with the same compassion. The company culture focused on people which was really pleasant to see.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed the internship so much. The time flew by and I can't believe the two weeks are over. The sessions were all very interactive, especially given the online platform. We got to ask questions of partners multiple times and have long discussions with graduates. Everyone was keen to make sure we were having the best time.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
I would advise others to put their all into the application process. Getting an experience day in your first year of university is the best way to get the internship, which gives you the best prospect for a graduate job. So really putting time into the first assessments will set you in good stead.
